Salem Public Library
Salem Public Library’s Book Discussion Group will meet at 7pm on July 25, 2017 to analyze the intricacies of a marriage in the book Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff. The book is the examination of a marriage over the course of twenty-four years. Lotto and Mathilde marry secretly when they are young and full of optimism for their future. The first half of the book, “Fates,’ is told from Lotto’s perspective. He struggles as an actor and playwright and Mathilde struggles to support him, both financially and artistically. Most of the time he is grateful to her both as a wife and collaborator but there are ups and downs to their relationship-artistic success and failure, a debilitating injury, a separation when Lotto goes to an artists’ colony, and then a terrible secret is revealed and fatally misunderstood. Mathilde remains something of a mystery until the second half of the novel, “Furies,” when Mathilde’s personality is unveiled. The Mathilde portrayed in the second half of the book is much different from her initial introduction. She is not Lotto’s muse supporting him in every way. Ultimately her doubt in him is revealed and the resulting damage she creates is exposed.
Bring your perspective to the conversation when the group meets in the library’s Quaker Room located at 821 E, State St., Salem, OH. No registration is required. New participants are always welcomed. The book may be borrowed from the library.
