The 35th annual Youngstown State University English Festival is scheduled for April 17, 2013 for the tenth through twelfth graders and April 18 and 19, 2013 for the seventh through ninth graders. About 3,000 junior and senior high school students from about 200 Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania schools come together with parents, teachers and other adults interested in promoting reading and writing excellence.
Teachers are invited to choose students to participate in the festival. Participants are required to read all seven books for their grade level. Students may compete in the Candace Gay Memorial Essay contest. Other students may prepare art projects for the art contest. During the workshop, they will listen to some of the authors they have read.
This year the guest lecturers will include Chris Crutcher, Sharon M. Draper, Nikki Grimes and Chris Crowe. The will also attend dramatic performances, participate in book discussions, play language and knowledge games and a variety of other reading and writing related activities.
